Tour de Greensboro
An Unforgettable Winter Experience - By: Jim Fredericks
"Nordic skiing at its best" was the consensus of the over one hundred cross-country skiers who took the challenge of skiing in the 2025 Tour de Greensboro on Sunday.
Nordic skiers from six states and Canada navigated both the public Greensboro trails and the private trails that are usually closed to the public. Blessed by the snow and weather Gods, skiers were treated to spectacular views of the Green Mountain range along trails lined with snow covered trees, and massive boulders.
With full compacity, 140 entrants took the challenge to ski this 25 km loop starting and finishing at the Highland Lodge in Greensboro, VT. The course was anything but flat with 2310 ft of elevation gain throughout the 25km. The less energetic skiers had the option to take the shorter 18 km course. All participants received a Toko hat along with a food station at the halfway point with hot cider and donuts. Upon return to the Highland Lodge, skiers conversed about their adventurous day while eating hot chili and cornbread.
What is also unique about this event besides the course itself, is the demographics of registrants. Eighty-two percent were over forty years of age and 61.8 percent were women. Unlike most ski events, the Tour de Greensboro is non-competitive even though participants could ski at whatever pace they desired. The grooming on the public Greensboro trails was provided by the Craftsbury Outdoor Center while the private trails were groomed by Jim Fredericks, who is also the Tour de Greensboro volunteer event director. Over twenty-five local volunteers, including First Responders were instrumental in making the Tour de Greensboro a successful and safe event. A big thanks also goes out to our sponsors that include Toko US, Lumi Experiences, Willey's Store, Connie's Kitchen, Jasper Hill Farm, and the Highland Lodge.
About $2200 was raised through the Tour for the Greensboro Association and the volunteers are from the Greensboro community.
